Samsung T699 for T-Mobile teased in UAProf, reveals 720p display 0

Image

No doubt, T-Mobile is in the middle of a rebuilding stage as a result of the AT&T merger attempt. Should it be much of a surprise, then, that the carrier would be looking at cranking out a smartphone lineup full of tempting options? Not at all. It turns out that Samsung is making some contributions to the cause, as a UAProf file for the unannounced T699 has been discovered. Just like most user agent profiles, there’s little to discern here aside from the obvious inclusion of a 720p HD display — but at least this lets us know that the handset exists, and that we have something new to look forward to on T-Mobile. Check out the source if you want to do some deciphering of your own.

Kate Gosselin Cruise Canceled Due to Low Sales 0

Royal Caribbean’s Kate Gosselin-hosted celebrity cruise has been canceled because of poor turnout and low ticket sales, according to reports.

The mother of eight was supposed to set sail from August 12-19 at a rate of $1,900-$3,175 per ticket. Astonishingly, there weren’t many takers.

All cruise-goers have been fully refunded for the nixed event.

Kate Gosselin Facelift

Said a spokesman for the company of the Kate Gosselin cruise:

“Yes, that event has been canceled. We just didn’t get the turnout that we desired and mutually we agreed that if we didn’t get it, we would cancel.”

“All ticket purchasers have been notified and been refunded. Some have chosen to continue on the cruise, but everyone was given the choice.”

The reality star was apparently very apologetic at least.

“Kate asked for everybody’s names, addresses and phone numbers and reached out to each one personally,” the spokeswoman added.

“It was nothing to do with Kate Gosselin … we needed to hit certain numbers to make it work and they just weren’t where they needed to be.”

It’s unclear how many tickets were actually purchased.

Consolidation Hits UK Local Sites: Zoopla Buys UpMyStreet, Folds It Into Its Own Property Pages 0

zoopla home pageThe UK housing market has been on shaky legs for a while now — with tight lending conditions, unemployment and general consumer confidence all playing their part in slowing things down — and that is having the inevitable knock-on to sites built up to serve that sector: today brings news that Zoopla, one of the UK’s bigger property sites, is buying up a smaller competitor / data supplier, UpMyStreet, and folding the latter company’s business into its own. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it looks like the acquisition means curtains for the UpMyStreet brand, one of the oldest local-listings sites in the UK: if you visit that URL now you will see that the site now automatically redirects to Zoopla’s pages, with no sign of UpMyStreet branding to be seen.

Panasonic sends 100,000 LEDs down Tokyo river, mates tech with tradition 0

Panasonic sends 100,000 LEDs down Tokyo river, mates tech with tradition

If you’d been by the shore of the Sumida River in central Tokyo this past weekend, you would have noticed that it was glowing a distinct shade of blue. That’s because Panasonic decided to kick off the first-ever Tokyo Hotaru (fireflies) festival by sending 100,000 EVERLED light bulbs down the river, both to mimic fireflies as well as to pay homage to a Japanese tradition of floating candles on the water. Before you cringe too much at the thought of the environmental impact, rest assured that Panasonic minimized the footprint of its aquatic LED parade. All the bulbs ran on solar power (presumably, charged during the day) that kept Evolta batteries fed inside, and the entire lot was scooped up in a large net afterwards. We love the exhibition as a large-scale demo of sustainable lighting — you may just want to avoid fishing along the Sumida’s shoreline for awhile in case you catch a straggler.

Microsoft applies for low-powered interactive second display system patent 0

Microsoft applies for low-powered interactive second display system

Oh patent applications… where creative ideas dance shoulder to shoulder with ill-conceived folly. Which do we have here today? We’re not sure. What we are sure of, however, is that someone at Microsoft has applied for a patent that describes a device with two screens. Not that old chestnut, but the second screen being of lower-power, like e-ink, and displaying different information based on the state of the first one (i.e. is it against your face or not.) The not-to-be-trusted images illustrate the second screen covering the back of a device and displaying a clock, or other such user specified info. The app does state that it would continue to display info, even if the device was in a sleep mode, and describes a non-flat contour. If you were to read into it, it might sound like rear e-ink phone housing, but if this ever comes to pass, it’ll likely be with a little bit of dressing down, so don’t get too excited.
