Beginner Scrapbooking ? What You Need To Get Started 0

Scrapbooking, for me, is about collecting and preserving memories for future generations of my family to share in, but as a hobby there are other reasons for doing it.

Scrapbooking can also be the perfect family hobby ? it?s something several people can work on together, it can use a large amount of throw-away household items making it an inexpensive hobby to teach your children, and there is no wrong way of doing it, so your young kids, and newcomers to the hobby, can make all the mistakes in the world and it doesn?t matter.

Of course, as your skills develop over time, and with practice, you will want to create more creative and personalized scrapbook pages as well.

To get started with scrapbooking you don?t need a whole lot of anything, but it does help to have a little bit of at least these basic materials and ideas:

Theme

Your scrapbook page needs to be about something, it needs a theme. For my family and I, a lot of our pages focus on our hobbies ? martial arts, sports, cartoon drawing (Manga), vacation spots, the seasons (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) and my children growing up over the years. I have even done pages about scrapbooking to help teach others how it?s done.

Your scrapbooking theme can be about anything that interests you, anything at all.

Colors

While you can use any colors you want, I always prefer pages to be somewhat coordinated when it comes to colors. I find most themes I build pages around naturally have colors associated anyway (sand and blue for beach related pages, maroon and grey for the local high school colors, red, white and blue for 4th July pages, etc), and I like to work more or less within these.

Materials

Where to begin? There are so many materials you can use to scrapbook with! At the most basic level you will need:

A scrapbook page or board

Some paper scraps / magazine pages / old photos

Some accessories / embellishments ? related to the theme, this can be things like leaves, pressed flowers, shells, a small flag, school patch, ribbon, old cut-up clothes (jeans are great for scrapbooking with).

Glue

Scissors

Metal ruler

Craft knife

Imagination

Optional, but often the most important resource you can have, is your imagination. You can follow scrapbook patterns and scrapbook page layouts and create pages very easily, for scrapbooking is about your personal take on things so I find it always helps to bring your imagination, bring your personality with you.

That?s really all you need to get started with beginner scrapbooking. As you practice you will find pages a lot easier to build, no matter what subject and theme you chose. There are literally hundreds and thousands of variations of page layout, materials to use, colors to use, and subjects to build your scrapbook pages about.
